How to Feed Your Puppy

Puppy Care - Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital

Fresh Water

Your puppy must always have access to a bowl of fresh water. Change the water regularly, as puppies tend to play with it. Wash and sanitize the water bowl at least once a day.

Provide Several Small Meals A Day

Provide your puppy with several small meals a day

Avoid feeding your puppy scraps. They do not meet any of the puppy's nutritional needs. Excluding scraps will also help prevent problems of obesity, which could affect your canine friend later in life.

Up to the age of six months, your puppy should be given three meals a day at scheduled times. Keep feeding times consistent.  Always give the food in the same bowl placed in the same spot. This will train your puppy to have good eating habits.

Avoid Overfeeding

Follow the guidelines recommended on the food container and/or those provided by your veterinarian.

Guidelines for Number of Meals Per Day:

Small Breed Puppies up to 4 months of age: Feed 3 meals per day.
Small Breed Puppies 4 - 10 months of age: Feed 2 meals per day.
